Van Asselt Community Center
Expansion and Renovation

Van AsseltSpool & Thread
The City of Seattle Community Center Levy provided a $2.5 million construction budget for an expansion of the existing Van Asselt Community Center.

Included in the expansion are a new main entry with reception counter, new staff offices, interior and exterior public restrooms, and a changing room with a shower. Additional spaces include a lounge area, teen and game activity rooms, and a large dividable multi-purpose room with an adjoining kitchen and after-school room. A new elevator from the expansion connects to the existing gymnasium for ADA accessibility. We coordinated with artist AJ Power for his exterior art installation, "Spool and Thread," as part of the 1% for Art program. The expanded center accommodates activities such as teen camps, classes, after-school programs, community meetings, weddings and seniors programs, and after school child care. Significant site work improved the use of space, parking was expanded, and we worked closely with the community in designing the new play area.
